HISTORICAL MONUMENTS

1. Cuthbert Chapel (Berthierville)

The first Protestant temple in Quebec, it was erected in 1786 by Lord James Cuthbert. Calling on the know-how of local craftsmen, the extremely simple fieldstone building is barely distinguishable from the houses of the time. Noblesse oblige, Cuthbert adorned his chapel with a bell tower and, strangely enough, his oldest illustration shows it adorned with a cross, a symbol of idolatry among the Presbyterians. He, or one of his sons, would he have had it posed?

Against a Scottish backdrop, in a plain watered by the St. Lawrence, two peoples met, jostled on both sides by political upheavals. The Chapel stands today in the landscape as a symbolic witness to this encounter.

2. L'Île-des-Moulins (Terrebonne)

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Île-des-Moulins was the heart of the development of one of the most important seigneuries in the history of Quebec. Today, five restored buildings, two permanent exhibitions and several guided tours will bring the memory of the place to life.

Visit the Seigneurial Office, the old Bakery as well as the flour, saw and carding mills. In the company of a guide or at your own pace, discover or explore the many exhibitions on Île-des-Moulins and Maison Bélisle. Also, take advantage of the many activities taking place on the island in summer, at Fort le carrying.

The Terrebonne mills, active from 1721 to 1940, still shine on the magnificent site of Île-des-Moulins.

3. Maison Bélisle (Terrebonne)

The Île-des-Moulins museum complex brings together three historic buildings where its permanent and temporary exhibitions are displayed: the Maison Bélisle, the Bureau seigneurial and the Moulin neuf. Witness to almost 300 years of history, the Museum preserves and showcases the objects in its collection and transmits historical knowledge through exhibitions, interpretation activities and animations.

Île-des-Moulins and Maison Bélisle constitute the heritage component of the Société de développement culturel de Terrebonne (SODECT). Occupying a heritage site located in Terrebonne, SODECT manages a museum complex that addresses the social, economic, industrial and cultural history of Terrebonne and the Moulins region from its founding to the present day. SODECT offers a rich and diversified historical interpretation program facilitating the understanding and appreciation of the origins of collective identity for the benefit of the population of Terrebonne and its visitors through the enhancement of the collection of objects and of buildings linked to the town of Terrebonne and the local industrial bourgeoisie entrusted to it.

The plan of this stone building is composed of a rectangular nave with three naves and a narrower chancel ending in a five-sided polygonal apse. Of neoclassical inspiration, its monumental facade has a central body crowned with a gable and flanked by two slightly projecting towers surmounted by a bell tower with a lantern. A stone sacristy is grafted to the apse in the extension of the choir. Rectangular in plan with one floor, it is topped with a roof with two straight slopes.
